Vancouver Singer-Songwriter Haley Blais Shares New Single “The Cabin”
Vancouver’s Haley Blais recently dropped her new single “The Cabin,” a track that brims with emotion as it alternates between soft guitar strumming and pockets of intense, full band punctuation. Tying everything together are Blais’s crisp vocals, telling a story of nostalgia and days past.
Blais shares details about the cabin that inspired the song as she speaks about the track, describing, “a sweaty, dehydrated memory of my summers spent in the cabin on the lake. It wasn’t our cabin — my dad’s brother’s wife’s cousin’s friends owned it or something — but it was ours. I had my first sips of beer, first almost kisses. It’s a fluffy recollection until the guitars break through with their overbearing distortion like a roaring tidal wave and I’m thrown back into the discomfort of real time.”
Blais released the track alongside the music video, directed by Zia Kalyan, which features Blais as the conductor of a surreal, chaotic orchestra in a grand theatre. Where at first you see Blais standing alone with headphones, she’s soon joined by the orchestra, then dancers, only to return to her solo performance as a conductor – alone on stage, as the light goes out.
Blais began her musical career as a classical opera singer, eventually changing paths, exchanging for a solo ukulele. She then traded again, leaving the ukulele behind in exchange for a guitar and a five piece band. In 2020, she released a debut full-length album of pop anthems, Below the Salt. Her sophomore full-length album, Wisecrack, will be released via Arts & Crafts on September 15.
