Indie Folk Artist Gert Taberner Honours His Late Mother With Heartfelt Release “To Break”

Vancouver based singer-songwriter Gert Taberner has shared his new single “To Break”. A heartfelt and bittersweet offering, the new single revisits the challenging year of caring for his terminally ill mother – just a year after losing his father to lung cancer in 2020. With help from his sister, the Taberner siblings cared for their mother until her last day.

“Our mom didn’t want to go to the hospital at the end,” he confides. “We took her home and were able to take care of her there. There was this lightness and warmth in terms of the way we treated each other a couple of days before she passed. It was one of the most beautiful experiences in my life—in a bittersweet way. We had a specific conversation where she was confident and told us she was done. ‘To Break’ is about being confronted with that farewell.”

Taberner’s soft croon and finger-picked guitar performance are a soothing combination, as his open-hearted lyricism balances being therapeutic and heartbreaking.
