Purity Ring – Another Eternity
4.5/5
If you’ve been patiently waiting for Edmonton electronic duo Purity Ring to release new music, you can take a sigh of relief, plug your headphones in and experience their sophomore work Another Eternity. Megan James and Corin Roddick have sharpened their skills, moving their style slightly towards the mainstream cushion of EDM and pop but with a minimalist intent that keeps them out of the ordinary.
Producing the album himself, Roddick’s use of deep bass tones as a foundation for most of the tracks adds a heavy, sonic dimension to the album, meanwhile contrasting the sound range with electronic trills and bright synth textures. That is without even mentioning James’ angelically soft vocals; soaring well above Roddick’s production, the Canadian duo is a match made in music-world heaven.
Purity Ring quickly sends the album into a higher realm with the dramatic swelling of electronic instrumentation and James’ dreamy vocals on “Heartsigh”. Almost seamlessly, “Bodyache“, the second track from the album, follows a similar pattern, with dynamic playfulness, and using deep, yet bright textures to harmonize with James’ high vocal range. Evolving their sound without changing their fine-tuned recipe, the melodic-pop influences shine through during the choruses of the tracks, giving the track list a more structured purpose that is still extraterrestrial and progressive.
Roddick’s use of R&B/hip-hop influences is critical to the depth and success of the tracks; “Stranger than Earth” and “Dusty Hymn” flaunt hip-hop/trap roots with the production and intensity of the bass-driven melody.
One of the first singles pre-released from the album, “Begin Again” captures the band’s soundscape and highlights their respective expertise. Dark tones and dynamic changes lead to a supernova of a chorus that equally balances James’ vocals and the swarm of vibrating textures.
While the album began with a brighter atmosphere, Another Eternity seems to close on a slightly darker feel; the frustration-filled “Flood on the Floor”, the tantalizing track “Sea Castle” and hypnotic “Stillness in Woes” cap off 10-track collection.
Simply said, Another Eternity is a treat for the ears; effortlessly reaching across the sound spectrum in each track, the stellar production of Corin Roddick and incomparable vocal talent of Megan James combine for a stunning sophomore album. Perfectly matching their sound, Purity Ring’s live shows are something worth attending. The band is heading on tour to support the album’s release – check out the dates and buy the album!
