July Talk – Push + Pull
Following an almost two year wait, Canadian blues-rock 5-piece July Talk release an energetic single titled “Push + Pull” and announce a new album set to drop later this year.
The dynamic single sounds something like sinister disco, as singer Leah Fay’s echo-y pop vocals weave in and out of focus, accompanied by Peter Dreimanis’ unmistakable guttural voice. There is noticeable tension throughout the track, as the band strays further from their grungy blues-rock roots and experiment with more synths than usual. The hallmark July Talk sound still rings through with slightly dissonant notes, Dreimanis’ aggressive drive and dramatic pause between bridge and chorus.
Overall, we’re impressed. The song is versatile; dance-y, but not too pop-y, and conducive to a few good headbangs, but not too abrasive for radio play. If “Push + Pull” is indicative of the new album sound, we can’t wait.
