July Talk – Push + Pull (Official Music Video)
Ever since their formation in 2012, Toronto alternative-blues rock group July Talk have been altering the alternative music scene with their distinct sound and peculiar theatrics. Lead by vocalists Leah Fay and Peter Dreimanis and their mysterious relationship, July Talk are following up their sensational self-titled 2012 debut with Touch. The sophomore album will be out September 9th, but the band shared the dynamic lead single “Push + Pull” back in April.
Now, the “sinister-disco” track has its visual accompaniment, following in traditional July Talk fashion. Continuing with the band’s black and white aesthetics, the new music video was choreographed by Fay, produced by Dreimanis, and directed by Nadia Tan (Bry Webb, Arkells). Tan explains:
“When July Talk first approached me to make a music video for Push + Pull, I had a long phone conversation with Pete about the meaning of the song. He told me it was about Western excess, about our never-ending appetite, about the types of people who consume and consume and don’t know when to stop, about our irrational but constant need for more food, more mind-altering substances, more sex, more ‘likes’, more money, more things. I thought it would be interesting to try to capture these themes in the video through raw documentary-style footage showing various groups of people partaking in excess in different ways across North America over the course of one night.”
Their upcoming album examines other forms of human condition and connection, which formed the inspiration for the name Touch. Dreimanis explains:
It seems to get easier every day to disconnect from the people around you. Leah and I started to see human touch as this pure thing—this antidote to a world that had become obsessed with mirrors and screens. We became fascinated with that moment where two bodies can actually touch and experience each other honestly.”
Between the stunning cinematography, gritty alt-rock, and the insatiable hook, “Push + Pull” dazzles and entertains, effortlessly forming a connection with the audience.
