Allen Tate – Being Alone
Known as the co-lead vocalist of Brooklyn-based indie baroque rock group San Fermin, Allen Tate is branching off on his own. Set to release his debut solo album Sleepwalker on October 28th, Tate has shared the first single from his eponymous record “Being Alone”. Although fans are used to hearing Tate’s voice over a dense and complex musical arrangements, his solo work is much more focused on the musician and what he has to offer.
Produced with San Fermin founder Ellis Ludwig-Leone, the lead single “Being Alone” came to be during a tour stop in Copenhagen, Tate explains:
“It started out as a poem I wrote while I was watching swans swimming on The Lakes in Copenhagen. I started thinking about how hunters use mating calls to lure out their prey. So, to a swan or goose, the call of a lover and the call of a hunter might sound identical. What sounds like love just might be death, and there’s only one way to know for sure. The chorus takes stock of how dark that train of thought was, and how three weeks alone in a foreign place had affected my thoughts in general.”
The mix of light and dark, cheerful and melancholic comes through with his poetic lyrics and deep, rich vocals. Similar to The National’s Matt Berninger, his voice gently sweeps across any sonic foundation; captivating on its own, and even more overtop the song’s atmospheric guitar, subtle horn rhythms, and powerful percussion.
