Scott Hardware – Joy
Toronto avant-pop singer-songwriter Scott Hardware has shared the first taste of his upcoming sophomore album Engel, with the lead single “Joy”.
Playing with the avant-garde styles of the ’80s, mixed with the glowing production of more modern Brit-pop, “Joy” is an expressive and explosive introspective piece for Hardware: “[Joy is] a song not about experiencing Joy, but a promise to myself to keep looking for it. Reading the lyrics back revealed to me that I consider this pretty hard work; I’d have to keep pushing the boundaries of my own spirituality, sexuality and relationships to find it. By the end of the song I’m begging no one and nothing in particular to ‘give me to my Joy’.”
Three years in the making, his forthcoming release Engel explores themes of sexuality and morality as a queer artist, and will be out for everyone on April 3rd. For now, listen to the lead single below. If you live in Montreal or Toronto, you can see him perform live later this month (dates below).
