The Strokes – At The Door (Music Video)
Alternative rock legends The Strokes have announced their sixth studio album, produced by the iconic Rick Rubin, The New Abnormal ,will be released April 10th, 2020. It has been almost seven years since their last album, Comedown Machine since lead singer Julian Casablancas, and guitarists Albert Hammond Jr., and Nick Valenski had been off working on solo work over the years.
Either way, the New York post-punk revivalists are back with their new single and music video for “At The Door”. While their older sound played off the elements of post-punk and NYC indie rock, the new song is rich with synthesizers and sci-fi elements, moving more into the realm of post-synthpop and re-emphasizing the band’s desire to sound new and exciting.
“At The Door” exudes natural sadness, similar to Casablancas’s solo masterpiece “Human Sadness”, as distorted drones and tones vibrate dismal chords to backdrop against his crooning vocals. Opening with “I can’t escape it / I’m never gonna make it out of this in time / I guess that’s just fine”, the song’s tone is set as the music video leans into the bleak yet passionate single. Multiple timelines, animated in a nostalgic 80’s/90’s cartoon style, come together to explore the various protagonists’ challenges as they come face to face with mortality.
