Taylor Janzen – I Feel A Darkness (Music Video)
Creativity has been an outlet for self-expression and human emotions since time began. The timeless catharsis has been a platform for artists to share their psyche with audiences in search of empathy, and hopefully to find a connection on a similar level.
Winnipeg indie singer-songwriter Taylor Janzen has been using music to express herself since she was young, filling her songs with her fears, anxieties, and honest feelings. Her latest single “I Feel A Darkness” is a prime example of this, openly writing about her mental health:
“I wrote ‘I Feel A Darkness’ in my car driving home from a party, feeling completely drained and fed up. In the months leading up to me writing it, I felt my mental health slowly deteriorating and felt like nothing I did could stop it. Writing this song felt like exhaling my fears. Even if it didn’t go away, at least I could put it to words.”
Without hiding behind complex metaphors and overcomplicated musicality, Janzen cuts right to point, expressing her dark emotions through a stripped down, yet powerful chorus of “Cause I feel a darkness / Coming on, coming on, coming on / Just to keep me honest / I don’t know what I’m doing wrong”. The song’s simple structure makes way for Janzen’s strong vocal talents to shine through on the shadow-filled single.
