Charlotte Dos Santos – Helio (Music Video)
As life and relationships continue to evolve and become more complex, the conversation of self-love and self-care has become part of everyday life. Indie pop artist Charlotte Dos Santos explores that theme on her upcoming EP Harvest Time, lead by her new single and music video “Helio”.
For those that are unfamiliar with the word, “helio” is derived from the Greek god of the sun. Naturally, the song’s ethereal aesthetic allows the synthesizers and jazz-pop melodies to orbit around Dos Santos’ velvety style. Blending together jazz, baroque, and sythn-pop, “Helio” explores Dos Santos’ new understanding of the centre of her universe.
“‘Helio’ is about self love. It is about the power we hold within ourselves and the fact that we truly only need ourselves to be happy. Helio is a result of my obsession with the universe. Cosmology, astronomy and astrology is something I can wonder and read about for hours. I have always been like this. When I was writing Helio I first started writing the song with Helio representing someone else, someone I couldn’t live without- but then I realized I was tired of writing like that because it’s simply not true- we don’t need anyone to be our center, we are our center first and foremost. So I flipped the narrative resulting in Helio representing myself, and the love for oneself.”
Her crystallizing voice brings out the poignance in her lyrics, as the song’s eclectic recipe brings forth undiscovered textures and energy with each listen. The accompanying music video, directed by her partner, Eli Salcedo, plays with different Greek mythology stories, showing Dos Santos in colourful backdrops and costumes as she sings of her “Neptune, my ruler”.
