Ashleigh Ball – Vultures (Music Video)

Alongside being a voice actress and the lead singer of Vancouver indie pop group Hey Ocean!, Ashleigh Ball released a solo EP back in 2017, allowing her to be more independent in her creative endeavours. Choosing to return to her solo projects, Ball has released her new single and music video “Vultures”.

Recorded alongside Grammy winning producer Chin Injeti at his studio in Vancouver, “Vultures” was a naturally occurring burst of creativity: “We had been spending a lot of time writing together on other people’s projects and just having fun being creative and building out ideas”, says Ashleigh. “One day I brought my flute to a session and Chin was so stoked. He built a moody beat and this tune came together real easily.”

Ball’s flute, mixed with glitchy electronic textures provides a lush backdrop for Ball’s unique, bright vocals to shine in a more melancholic fashion. The song’s dramatic tone is supported by the underlying theme of friendship and vulnerability.

Ball explains the track is about “the intimate connection of lifelong friendships and the importance of women strengthening each other. It’s about the ways we can be truly vulnerable in these friendships and cut out the people who are threatened by that openness.”

It was written after a night out with a close friend and the unwarranted cost of being women at a bar: “I had spent a couple nights before with a very close friend who was going through a lot of intense life stuff at the time. We were out having a drink near her place and were getting into heavy emotional conversations and these men kept on swooping by our table with cheesy one liners, vying for out attention. ‘Like a pack of vultures’ my friend whispered. We left the restaurant and the men, behind and continued our long healing conversations into the wee hours. I slept over at her place that night and woke up with the song lyrics in my head.”

Ball will be following up her 2017 EP with more music and a tour this year, so stay tuned by visiting her website, and enjoy the single below.
