Cold Years – 62 (My Generation’s Falling Apart) (Music Video)
“It’s shite being Scottish”.
The popular quote from Irvine Welsh’s 1993 novel Trainspotting has become a mantra of sorts of Scottish alternative rock group Cold Years. Since Brexit, the Scottish four-piece have been voicing their displeasure with the UK’s referendum, where 62% of Scotland voted “Stay”. Their new single “62 (My Generation’s Falling Apart)” is a hard-hitting rock anthem that tackles the ongoing demise of the world:
“The song theme plays heavily on the tough times that particularly young people are experiencing right now, not just in Scotland or the UK but anywhere in the world where the political climate and resulting decisions have left our generation adrift. The starkest manifestation of this is Brexit, which has seen Scotland leave the EU against the will of 62% of the population. It’s this 62% of our country that we took inspiration for the song title. But this is a song for everyone across the world who feels angry and misrepresented by the status quo.”
Cold Years’ empathic worry for the future and the generations to come is translated into a crushing chorus and energizing alternative rock charisma. In tune with the likes of Rise Against and Gaslight Anthem, “62” hits fast and hard as a revolution-inciting alt-rock track.
The song’s release is accompanied by the new music video, which has the band playing with the tropes of Children’s TV, teaching them about the vices and evils of the world.
