Mack & Ben – These Walls
Sometimes indie records can be conceived in the most interesting of places. For Ottawa-based sibling duo Mack & Ben DiMillo, their latest “snack pack” EP was written, recorded, and mastered in their Nonna’s house (insert homemade pasta joke here).
Showcasing their cohesiveness as siblings and musicians, These Walls is a three track release that gives audiences a little taste of what’s to come. Leaving the full-band in the studio, the new snack-pack features stripped down tracks that bring out the authentic and raw talent found in the DiMillo genes.
Both life-long musicians – Mackenzie as a classically trained jazz vocalist, Ben as a self-taught guitarist/pianist – the pair are able to incorporate various genres, from soul, jazz, blues, and folk, into their music seamlessly. On the lead single “These Walls”, Mack’s powerful, yet angelic vocal abilities shine instantly in the forefront, as Ben’s well-rounded musicality brings depth and layering to song through the warm timbre of the acoustic guitar, piano, and bright harmonies.
Unsurprisingly so, the lead single came to be through the harmonious bond as siblings under one roof. Mackenzie shares:
“’These Walls’ was born out of a guitar lick. Ben threw the chorus melody at me one afternoon on the porch – and I swear the words “I’ll just keep talking to these walls, because they hear me…” flew out of my mouth faster than I could catch them. It was as if the lines were made for each other. Despite all of my attempts to swing that chorus in a more positive direction, I eventually had to give in and appreciate the immediate connection that the melody had with me”.
