Jade Hairpins – (Don’t Break My) Devotion
Toronto experimental hardcore punk band Fucked Up have been changing the punk scene for years, remaining one of the most unpredictable acts around, especially after their new wave-inspired 2018 release Dose Your Dreams.
Taking their creativity and quirkiness to new soundscapes, and the city of London, England, drummer Jonah Falco and guitarist Mike Haliechuk brought in pals Tamsin M Leach and Jack Goldstein to form the experimental group Jade Hairpins.
After a mysterious release on the same day as Dose Your Dreams, Falco and his band continued to forage new music and are now set to release their full-length Harmony Avenue on May 29th via Arts & Crafts. From the album is the self-described “technicolor burst” of a single “(Don’t Break My) Devotion”.
Best enjoyed with headphones, “Devotion” is flavourful disco tune rooted in new wave and post-punk, incorporating frantic textures and quirky mastering to create a sensational dance track. Snaps, bouncing synthesizers, and ol’ fashioned groove make “Devotion” one for the party playlist.
Directed by Haliechuk, the accompanying music video has the band getting lost in translation through weird phone conversations and bedroom-party dance moves.
