Jillian Lake – Bleed Baby Bleed
The ongoing shift in human history gives new light to music and its interpretation; words and music find different meaning as the uncertainty of life branches in chaotic ways. Same is to be said about how we comprehend our own emotions and thoughts; quarantine may be the time and situation needed for some to accept and understand their feelings.
Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Jillian Lake has shared her new single “Bleed Baby Bleed”, and although it was written pre-pandemic, the song’s core can perhaps be a catalyst for some to understand their ways:
“I just feel like everyone’s scared of feeling. They don’t want those real emotions so they just scramble to feel in different ways. Whether it’s vices, distractions, avoidance, or denial. This song is about just surrendering to the chaos sometimes, not fighting against the true emotion anymore, just letting yourself feel exactly as you are so that you can then move forward from it.“
Produced alongside fellow-B.C. musician Jordan Klassen, “Bleed Baby Bleed” brings out Lake’s rich folk undertones, providing a stripped-down foundation of crisp guitar strumming as her angelic vocals float overtop. The gentle slow-burner of a song gradually swells with lush textures and effects, giving her space build imagery with each verse and to howl across a poignant chorus.
