Mirabelle – Betty

There are few things greater, from an internal perspective, than finding one’s voice. Finally fitting comfortably into a shell that has gone through failures, resurrection, and self-monitored renovations is a clarity sought out by many – some over a life time.

Montreal singer-songwriter Laurence Hélie, now known as Mirabelle, has been able to break free of the mould she once held for herself musically. Who knows if it is true in the universe’s grand scheme, but for now she has certainly found her voice at this stage of her career.

Moving away from her self-described “musical depression” of francophone folk-country, Hélie rediscovered her sound for her new album Late Bloomer, out May 29th. From the release is her new single “Betty” which brings forth her childhood musical influences of alt-rock and dream-pop bands, such as The Cranberries and Mazzy Star, leaving behind her early beginnings.

Newly shaped as Mirablle, Hélie brings together her musical upbringing with the new-found clarity of her adult life, finding the strength to follow in her idols’ footsteps:

“I’ve always been super impressed with strong, confident, bold, woman musicians. I guess there’s a little bit of that in my wanting to make music. To be out there, fearless, like them.”

“Betty” is certainly bold. Moving swiftly from tapedeck-birthed synthesizer tones and hypnotic percussion, it suddenly crashes open as Hélie sings a chorus of “As much as I would love to be Veronica / I’ll always be Betty / Sure we can fool anybody / but we can’t fool ourselves.”
