We the Commas – Sherry

We the Commas are a SoCal trio made of brothers Cam, Lenny and Jordy Comma and describe their sound as surf alternative R&B, which with their new single “Sherry” is pretty spot on. Inspired by the likes of the Beach Boys, John Mayer and Miguel, they have a lush and laid-back sound, giving in to the soothing waves of the West Coast and the swooning hearts of young love. Plus, their sibling chemistry makes it hard not to suggest they may be the new Jonas Brothers.

Ketch Harbour Wolves – Exodus

Toronto experimental alt-rock group Ketch Harbour Wolves are inspired by their city; the physical and social changes, the loss and love scattered around town, the natural beauty hidden away as Toronto is reshaped. Their new single “Exodus” is an ode to the Don Valley, using their ethereal builds and atmospheric intensity to paint a picture of the natural space below the Bloor Viaduct. The looping guitar effects and filtered percussion builds into a textured, sonic experience.

theMIND – A Spike Lee Jawn

Chicago’s theMIND gives the genres of R&B and hip-hop a fresh voice with his experimental style, finding similarities to the raw, independent style of early Chance the Rapper. On his new single “A Spike Lee Jawn”, he incorporates blocky production to give a dense foundation for the alternative hip-hop track about the racial injustices and the need for social reform. He shares:

To Whom it May Concern,
FUCK 12 and reparations have been due. This song is a 400 year old invoice.
Best,

theMIND

Her Songs – Lost A Little

Her Songs is an example of power in number.  The global female collective of producers, musicians, songwriters and artists consists of London-based Dane Marie Dahlstrom, Brooklyn-based Colombian Dani Murcia, Christchurch New Zealand-based Emily C Browning, French Londoner The Naked Eye and London-based Emmavie.

The five artists rendezvoused in an AirBNB in Toronto in 2019 to produce their 2-Part EP Toronto Vol. 1 & 2. The second half will be released later this year, but for now have shared the lo-fi R&B single “Lost A Little”.

The group’s synergy comes out through the crisp production and neo-soul melodies and R&B vocal harmonies, shining some positivity into the world and celebrating female collaboration.

Marie-Clo – Animals Eating People

Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Marie-Clo combines the dramatic with the colourful. With a background in musical theatre, her heart lies in the performing arts and carries it over into her solo career. With a full-length slated to be released in 2021, Marie-Clo has shared her latest single “Animals Eating People”, showcasing her abilities as a singer and performer. She teeters between bright and sombre on the new single, allowing her voice and lyrics to shine overtop a colourful indie-pop foundation.

Moscow Apartment – New Girl

Brighid Fry and Pascale Padilla make up the indie folk-rock duo Moscow Apartment. Their beginnings as childhood friends has turned into musical partners as teenagers, and are releasing their sophomore EP Better Daughter on July 10th.

From the release is the new single “New Girl”, a confident, folk-infused rock song that shows Fry and Padilla switching gears from acoustic songwriting into more studio-ready tunes.

But despite the song’s upbeat demeanour, “New Girl” is a response to the misogyny and catcalling they experience as young women, singing “Don’t look at me / Just let me be”.

Black Noi$e ft. Liv.e – The Band

Detroit-based producer Black Noi$e has been working with the likes Earl Sweatshirt and Danny Brown for a number of years now, but is showcasing his solo work by releasing his label debut Oblivion later this year. From the release is the old-school hip-hop inspired single “The Band” featuring L.A.-based artist Liv.e. The slow-burning track brings together soul, hip-hop, R&B, and hints of electronica for a short but sweet sample of Black Noi$e’s style.

Erez Zobary – Blue (For Now)

Toronto-based artist Erez Zobary has spent the last few years building a name for herself. She has released three EPs and performed at places like Lee’s Palace and National Music Centre in Calgary. Adding to her discography is her new single “Blue (For Now)”, a charming and soothing R&B tune inspired by Amy Winehouse and ’80s soul. Her voice dominates the track as she sings about moving through a break-up.
