Home Counties Turn The Mundane “Dad Bod” Into A Hit
After releasing their devilishly quirky debut single “Redevelopment”, Bristol-based five piece Home Counties have teased another new single ahead of their debut EP Redevelopment out September 4th via Alcopop! Records. “Dad Bod” follows suit with their Talking Heads-esque ’70s/’80s alternative rock sound, twisting it into a prog-pop tune about middle-class masculinity.
Speaking about the new single, songwriter/vocalist Will Harrison shares, “‘Dad Bod’ explores modern middle-class masculinity, with a particular focus upon the ‘progressive’ metropolitan man. The song initially takes a light-hearted standpoint listing the aesthetic traits and status symbols of modern men before moving on to address a darker side which is hidden behind the comfortability and respectfulness of a ‘Dad Bod’.”
With steady post-punk rhythms and climbing arrangements, the song subtly changes lanes, from “weak dad humour…falls asleep to Lettermen”, to “don’t he know he’s over paid / don’t he know he’s twice her age”. Home Counties use their humour and alternative sound to turn an otherwise boring and mundane subject into a catchy tune.
