Haviah Mighty – Thirteen

Toronto based rapper Haviah Mighty released her Polaris Music Prize-winning album 13th Floor back in May 2019, using it as a platform to enrich the discourse on racial injustice and social reform. However, the relevance of her commentary is more prevalent than ever in 2020. “Thirteen” depicts the journey of Black people in North America and the continuation of longstanding prejudice. Haviah explains it best:

โ€œThirteen speaks factually and candidly, to the painful journey of Black people in North America. And it speaks to how that journey has morphed into continued racial prejudice, using the media and using the law. To get rid of white supremacy is to identify it at its root. I hope when people watch Thirteen, they feel moved to do their part in reversing white supremacy. I hope we can begin to see one another as equal โ€“ a dream I’ve always hoped could one day be a reality. And I hope people realize that it’s going to take WORK! Who is willing to work, to make change?”

Mint – M180

Grimsby, UK alt-rock group Mint found their way onto a previous episode of From the Inbox with their feverish hit “Turbulence” and now the four-piece are back with “M180”, a head-banging good time about coming of age in the dead-end of Northern England towns. Named after the M180 highway which leads drivers out of Grimsby, the freedom of driving around in your late teens comes to life with their gritty indie rock sound and humorously relatable lyrics.

Family of Things – YKB

After the success of their latest full-length Oscilloscope last year, Hamilton based duo Family of Things are gearing up to release a deluxe edition featuring the new single “YKB”. It’s perfect for a bedroom dance party, capturing the energy of electro-pop, and the soulful groove of ’80s pop.

Skyway Man – Muddy Water

For his upcoming album The World Only Ends When You Die, James Wallace, who performs under the moniker Skyway Man, created a world for his alter ego, telling the tale of a man who struggles to cope with the reality of death. From the psych-folk gospel blues collection comes Chapter One “Muddy Water”, the beginning of the man’s journey along the River Styx accompanied by Death.

The aforementioned blend of genres come together in a rich, full sound, complete with a steady bass line and groovy guitar solo. Wallace’s earthy vocals add an alluring texture to the chill folk-blues tune, wrapping the listener in soul and narrative.

Sam Roberts Band – Ascension

It’s been about four years since Sam Roberts and his band released their album TerraForm but the Montreal icon has returned with a brand new single “Ascension”. In true SRB fashion, it’s got spirit, soul, and rocking hooks, this time celebrating the underdogs as a way to keep morale high and ambitions higher. Hints of British post-punk and punk from the ’80s sneak through in the background as Roberts cranks up the energy with each chorus.

If you live in Ottawa, you can catch Sam Roberts Band performing as part of the Bluesfest Drive-In concert series August 1st.

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald – I Love That Sound

Calgary native Michael Bernard Fitzgerald has a knack for creating the perfect soundtrack for dreamy, rugged folk fans. His honest and reflective lyrics paint pictures while his seemingly simple instrumentation provides a soothing backdrop with subtle details and rich vulnerability. On his new single “I Love That Sound”, Fitzgerald dreams up a picturesque rural life with his wife, mixing together fantasy with natural beauty.

Sad Night Dynamite – Icy Violence

UK experimental-pop duo Sad Night Dynamite are hard to pinpoint. Their sound varies from bedroom hip-hop to worldly electronic, finding whatever they can to build a universe inside their music. On their new single “Icy Violence”, the unpredictability of its sonic direction is half the fun as the pair keep things strange, mysterious, and exciting. Hints of Glass Animals, The Avalanches, Post Malone, and Twenty One Pilots get blended together on the dizzying track.

ALITA – Bodies

Seattle-based pop artist ALITA is back in the Inbox with her new single “Bodies”, using her dazzling pop sensibilities to celebrate and explore female sexuality. The hooks and passion of ’00s pop reminiscent of Brittney Spears and J LO builds the foundation of the track, as ALITA sprinkles her own personality and sound into the track.

Liza Anne – Change My Mind

Indie singer-songwriter Liza Anne is releasing her new album Bad Vacation next Friday (July 24th), and the collection is a mishmash of art-rock, post-punk, alternative, and pop, using the varying genres to create charismatic tunes about life, relationships, and mental health. Her latest single “Change My Mind” is about finding the maturity and ability to connect with someone rather than “winning” a conflict. Dance-rock grooves and staggering time signatures give “Change My Mind” a quirky aesthetic.

Kaytranada – Look Easy

After Kaytranada released his critically-acclaimed sophomore album BUBBA back in December, the Montreal producer has followed up with some new music. “Look Easy”, which features R&B singer Lucky Daye, has Kaytranada on his lighter side, creating a late night bass-heavy tune perfect for the 3am after-party

Mabes – Too Young To Love

With a full-length and an EP under her belt, UK folk-pop artist Mabes has shared her latest single “Too Young To Love”, once again building off her lush acoustic pop sound. On the new track, she explores the uncertainty of love and feeling insecure about “the one”.
