BERWYN Says Goodbye In Poignant New Single “Trap Phone”
From the solitude of a rundown hotel room outside of London, Trinidad-born/London-based musician BERWYN holed himself up for two weeks on the eve of a return trip to his home country. With an old laptop and broken headphones, BERWYN recorded his forthcoming debut mixtape. His new single “TRAP PHONE” is a product of his hermit recording process, and is as self-reflective and intimate as his self-inflicted lockdown.
Providing a poetic and sincere flow to the world of hip-hop, “TRAP PHONE” is a delicate love song between friends that reimagines the possibilities of R&B and hip-hop the same way Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange opened the door for masculine vulnerability and poignant songwriting. Singing about a friend who was victim of inner-city violence, “TRAP PHONE” switches between slow-burning hip-hop and spoken word verses as BERWYN lets it all out in a poetic interlude: “when you go it leaves a hole in my soul / if they have a funeral for you / I can’t promise I’ll go / I don’t cry in front of people / I only cry on my own”.
