Antonioni Turn True Crime Into Grunge With New Single “Mary Bell”; Announce Signing to Lauren Records
Following a traumatic experience with a best friend, Antonioni frontwoman Sarah Pasillas was inspired to write her new song “Mary Bell” as a way to deal with the situation. “I wrote this song after watching a couple True Crime Youtube videos about young girls who became murderers” she begins, “I was drawn to this topic in particular as one of my best friends murdered someone a couple years ago– an incident that was so traumatizing and close to my heart that I can’t help but explore the grief time and time again through songwriting”.
The sombreness of her experience comes out in the hazy guitars and crashing chorus, translating her frustration and anxiety into noise.
Despite the world-shattering circumstances of the song, Pasillas is still able to find the artistic qualities of her work and her predecessors, “I also like songs that decide to take on traumatic stories (like Polly by Nirvana and John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens), as a way to discuss and ask questions like, “how close am I to evil?” No question is more pertinent, right? To face the evil inside yourself and try to recognize it in all its forms”.
The release of “Mary Bell” comes alongside the Seattle-based DIY rock band’s announcement to signing with indie label Lauren Records. With two EPs and a handful of music videos under their belt, Antonioni will surely capture the attention of a wider audience with their ’90s-infused garage rock, borrowing sounds from Nirvana, Sleater-Kinney, and P.J. Harvey on their new single.
