Cold War Kids Pick Favourites With “Somewhere”
Cold War Kids have released their latest single, “Somewhere,” in advance of their new album New Age Norms 2, coming August 21st. Part two of a trilogy of albums, the latest single is a band favourite.
Speaking to the single, Willett calls the song “uplifting, but it has a sadness to it, a rock-iness that’s almost feminine and soulful.” There’s a message of perseverance and a strong sense of hope within the song, partially inspired by the freedom of interpretation. Willett elaborates, “The line, ‘I knew you were crazy/The night you shaved your head’, my wife had this long, long hair and then shaved her head really short. Sometimes when you’re writing, little things pop up and you think, is that going to make sense? That’s to me the great thing about writing, when you can do something that’s very much based on a real thing but can be interpreted however by the listener.”
From the first verse, with lyrics like “When you live on borrowed time / you can’t help but smile,” to the closing of the second chorus, “I’m not giving up on you now / I won’t let the sun go down / Oh my my / We’re gonna make it somewhere, someday, somehow,” the song can easily become a new anthem to keep on keeping on.
The song tells a story everyone can relate to, and yet it seems at its core to be a story about nothing specific. “Sometimes when you’re writing little things pop up and you think, is that going to make sense?” says Willett. “That’s to me the great thing about writing, when you can do something that’s very much based on a real thing but can be interpreted however by the listener.”
