Armon Jay Calls A Helpline on His New Single “Half Life”
On his new single “Half Life”, singer-songwriter Armon Jay shares his inner dialogue about the internal debate about reaching out for help or just sitting and waiting it out. The guitarist and songwriter joined Dashboard Confessional for the last two years, but “Half Life”marks the return to his solo career, acting as the lead single for his upcoming full-length The Dark Side of Happiness.
A candid examination of his own inner conflict about whether or not he should reach out to someone for help, Jay says the song came to be after a day of feeling depressed. “I thought about calling helpline,” he says, “but then I would rather feel this way than have to talk to someone about it.”
While that may make the song sound like it’s inherently a bit of a downer, it has a more light, upbeat vibe than expected. The tone of the song could be driven by Jay’s desire to break the stigma surrounding mental health: “I know there are people who can relate. If I can write a song that could help others not feel alone, then that helps too.”
The honesty in the lyrics is what will draw you into the song, and if you’ve ever felt any bit alone, there’s a familiarity to the story it tells. “My phone is ringing but I don’t want to talk / it’s hard enough to keep up with my own internal dialogue / sure I could think of some dumb excuse / a little white lie, something half true” has a particular truth to it that seems almost universal.
“Half Life” is the first single off Armon Jay’s forthcoming solo album The Dark Side of Happiness, available September 18th, introducing his warm approach to heavy songwriting.
