Ashleigh Ball Revisits The Night She Partied With Elon Musk On “Lavender”
You may recognize the name from acclaimed indie pop trio Hey Ocean! ,but Ashleigh Ball is the lead singer/songwriter of the Vancouver act, as well as being a celebrated voice actor and solo artist. Since 2017, Ball has released two solo albums and has continued to tease new music with her latest single “Lavender”.
Following the previously released tunes “Vultures” and “LOVE IT“, “Lavender” continues her wonderful, full-of-life sound, bringing out the brightness of pop music to coincide with her expressive storytelling and refreshing sense of wonder. Written about a one-off experience in a lavender farm field, the new pop tune has an interesting backstory:
“Last August on a beautiful summer evening I went to a disco party at a friends lavender farm on Vancouver island”, she begins. “I arrived right at sunset and things were just getting underway, party wise. Elon Musk was there (!?) with an entourage of people who had come in on a private jet. I rolled up in a sequin clad jumpsuit and these platform silver disco boots that I’d never worn before and dove right into the fun. As the party started escalating so did the party favours and things began to get a little bit wild. At one point I was running at full speed through the rolling lavender field and I tripped over a tent line. My ankle snapped and swelled up immediately. I needed medical attention but certainly was not in the place to get it. It was in that moment I decided to accept my fate: if I was going to go down, it might as well be at a raging summer party amongst the lavender“.
Fortunately, Ball would survive and go on to write the psychedelic pop track, bringing her story to life with experimental percussion, loops, and a driving, powerful brass section. You can enjoy the colourful lyric video below alongside the new single:
