Nick Kingswell Misses Australia In New Single “Homesick”
Singer-songwriter Nick Kingswell has shared his candid single “Homesick,” narrating his move from his home country of Australia to the UK. A candid anthem driven by guitar and a steady beat carried throughout the song, “Homesick” lays bare the inevitable feelings of homesickness that came along with his move.
Incorporating familiar indie tones with a slight country twang, “Homesick” has a somewhat ominous tone to it, as Kingswell sings about the home he left behind. “I love living in the UK and I feel equally lucky to get to go home to a place like Phillip Island. It’s the best of both worlds,” says Kingswell, adding that “the feeling of homesickness comes and goes.” Layered with intricate guitars, punctuated with complimentary backing vocals and string instrumentation, there’s a dynamic movement within the song tempered with deep emotion, and a cinematic feel.
Reminiscent of artists such as Bon Iver and Fink, Kingswell presents his own take on the indie folk genre, producing a familiar yet unique sound that provides a musical safe haven for fans of the genre. “Homesick” brims with lyrics that draw on Kingswell’s memories of Australia’s oceans, beaches, and open city landscapes, such as the chorus’ “The rivers flow, high and low / and I’m still homesick,” or the bridge’s “it’s only water, I heard it calling me home / it’s only water, feel it stirring my bones / but I know I’m just homesick.” The latter lyrics are followed by a grungy guitar solo, a standout moment for the song.
Speaking to how he deals with the waves of homesickness, Kingswell says “it’s like the whole idle hands idea. As long as I’m busy and happy and in touch with my family regularly, I can make it work.”
Kingswell will be releasing his new album Brontide on October 23rd. Hear “Homesick” below:
