Katie Pruitt Rejects Social Complacency With New Single “Look The Other Way”
Nashville-based folk singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt is no stranger to going against the grain. Growing up in a conservative and religious household in Atlanta, Georgia, she kept her sexuality a secret for most of her young life. Her debut album Expectations was a compelling and empathetic collection showcasing her articulation as an emerging artist and queer-identifying individual, breaking free of her restraints with musical stature.
Continuing with her strong stance-taking songwriting comes the politically-charged “Look The Other Way”, a motivational country-folk pop tune expressing concern over the growing injustice and decline of society, specifically aimed at those turning away from the problem.
“Look the Other Way deals with the ongoing issue of complacency and how we all play a role in it.” Pruitt reflects, “I wanted to confront that complacency head on, both culturally and within myself. We have two choices when we witness evil being done: we can look the other way, or we can ask ourselves what we can do to stop it.”
Pruitt has never been shy to use her songs as a confident space to share her thoughts and experiences, “Look The Other Way” being no different. “And I get pissed when people tell me “that’s the way it is” / As if that’s all that they know how to say”, she sings on each chorus, putting her frustrations out for everyone on the table.
