UK Punk Group NEWMEDS Share Destructive New Single “Twenty Three” From Forthcoming Debut EP
From Hull, Yorkshire comes NEWMEDS, a noisey punk four-piece heavily rooted in the sounds of turn-of-the-century post-hardcore icons like Refused and At the Drive In, but with their own underground style that is as blaring and brash as ever. Comprised of members from bands Winterfylleth, Drowners, and The Colour Line, NEWMEDS will be releasing their debut EP Nothing Is Heavier Than The Mind on November 13th via Man Demolish Records, and from the highly anticipated release is the new single “Twenty Three”.
Through coarse vocals and gripping metalcore riffs, “Twenty Three” is a candid reflection on lead vocalist Nick Cobley’s chronic illness while connecting the dots as a commentary on society’s apathetic overconsumption.
“I’ve struggled with Crohn’s since I was 12 and at around the age of 23 I really struggled to come to terms with being ill,” explains Cobley. “Everything we eat, consume and do in this time and age can be harmful. I feel like it’s mainly about the poison we put in our bodies every day without realising, but also about the things we continue to do knowing they are harmful for ourselves and for the world.”
With a chorus shouted mouthful of “We’re all just grains of sand / A drop in the ocean, a mix of chemicals / No faith, no purpose or meaning / Poisoning the air, that we’re breathing”, the new single a gut-punching and critical look at our world, supported by NEWMEDS’ natural, unfiltered punk stylings.
