Kenny Mason Connects With His Brother In New Music Video For “Exxon”

Back in April, Atlanta rapper Kenny Mason dropped his spectacular new album Angelic Hoodrat. The 14-track effort pushed his sound out of the region’s trap roots and into more well-rounded and genre-bending territory. His underrated status is hard to ignore, as he balances vulnerability and emotion with the unforgivingness of rap culture in his latest clip for “Exxon”.

A handful of tracks from the record have been given emotive and cinematic music videos, and now “Exxon” – the second half of “U in a Gang // Exxon” – has been added to the collection. Written about his brother following his release from prison, Mason opens up about the indirect consequences incarceration has on family and friends.

Shot in the Atlanta, the music video breaks down the song’s narrative, highlighting the choices that Mason raps about. “These n*** need to stop for a snack, they need a Glock in my lap / I like the feeling, I don’t even offer it back”, he opens on “Exxon”, as him and his friends cruise around the neighbourhood; the inviting temptation clashes with concern. The minimalist style of storytelling helps to bring the poignant track to its closing scene, mixing together atmospheric samples with Mason’s echoing voice and the safety of home.
