Wintersleep Frontman Paul Murphy Returns As POSTDATA With New Single “Twin Flames

POSTDATA – solo project helmed by Paul Murphy, who is also known for his work with Wintersleep – is back with a new single, music video, and announcement of a new POSTDATA album. The title track “Twin Flames”, is the centrepiece of the new album, due out in March 2021.

A mix of song and spoken word poetry approach, the acoustic instrumentation carries the song’s melody and brings listeners along. Building in intensity and dynamics as it progresses, the track incorporates  guitar, percussion, horns and more to create an eclectic and captivating collection of sounds. “This was initially an instrumental track,” shares Murphy. Co-producer Ali Chant suggested slowing it down and adding spoken word on top, which began the transformation of the track into what it is today. “I took a couple days to really work out the melody and the structure of the lyric/song within it. It’s a love song but also felt really poignant personally during full pandemic lockdown,” says Murphy.

At the core, “Twin Flames” is about a storm, and more importantly it’s about coming out on the other side of it. What Murphy notes as a freeing and powerful experience, the idea of weathering storms is both literal and symbolic, reflecting the feeling of navigating the current storm so many are finding themselves in. “You’re navigating this place…you can’t really see super far in front of you,” he says, and the track reflects the desire to endure and weather the storm, that in-between space. The accompanying music video is filled with storm imagery, the perfect visual partner to the single. Murphy’s face is faintly seen, as lightning flashes across a night sky and trees sway.

Twin Flames will be the third POSTDATA release, following 2010’s Postdata and 2018’s Let’s Be Wilderness. The title track is available to stream now, and you can watch the music video below.
