NYC Indie Songwriter Black Nash Shares Visual For “Alligator”

After leaving the U.S. military in 2019, Jody Smith found the transition from infantryman to civilian a bit of a challenge. “I basically fell flat on my face,” says Smith. “Which I think is a pretty typical experience for guys getting out. The civilian world is a whole different animal. Different work, different people, different lifestyle.”

Add in the COVID lockdown while living in Atlanta, and Smith was feeling frustrated, claustrophobic and restless. Fortunately, he found an outlet through his music, something he had been gradually working on but was never able to fully commit to during his time in the service. Under the moniker Black Nash, and now based in New York City, he has recorded a new self-titled full length, transposing the emotions of his time in Atlanta into small bursts of indie pop and art-rock energy.

His new single “Alligator” is a stellar first taste; it is refreshingly melodic with jolts of art-rock to round it out. Along with his grown-out hair and shaggy beard, Smith embodies some of the sounds of the ’70s rock era with his hazy guitar riffs and soul-tinged vocal melodies.

Watch the accompanying visual for “Alligator” below, and stay tuned for Black Nash, out February 26, 2021. You can pre-order the album here. As well, you can find this song and more great hits on the Starting Line-Up playlist.
