The Weather Station Teases Forthcoming Album With New Video For “Atlantic”
Releasing their latest track, “Atlantic”, The Weather Station – musical project of Canadian actress and musician Tamara Lindeman – continues to tease their upcoming album release. The third single comes as the February 5th release date of Ignorance approaches, continuing the narrative introduced by the previous singles “Tried To Tell You” and “Robber”, heard in the lyrics as well as depicted in the track’s music video.
Lead by percussion and keys, the quick pacing of the song is met with an undercurrent of mystery and urgency. Flutters of woodwind and strings add to Lindeman’s vocals, and the earthy tones of the instrumentation are matched by lyrics filled with references of nature – a sunset, flower petals, clouds – as she grapples with feelings of dread.
“[‘Atlantic’ tries] to capture something of the slipping feeling I think we all feel, the feeling of dread, even in beautiful moments, even when you’re a little drunk on a sea cliff watching the sun go down while seabirds fly around you; that slipping feeling is still there, that feeling of dread, of knowing that everything you see is in peril,” says Lindeman.
Upon hearing the lyrics, it’s no surprise that the video is rooted in nature, the very thing Lindeman fears losing. Featuring the full band in a clearing, surrounded by trees, the camera follows her movements as she wanders through the dark woods, eventually disappearing into the darkness and leaving the rest of the band behind, adding to the melancholic undertones. The subtle but persistent feeling of worry that accompanies that track is reminiscent of Lindeman’s own thoughts: “I feel like I spend half my life working on trying to stay positive. My whole generation does. But if you spend any time at all reading about the climate situation circa now, positivity and lightness are not fully available to you anymore; you have to find new ways to exist and to see, even just to watch the sunset.”
Following the previously released singles, the new music video for “Atlantic” follows the imagery of its predecessors. All three videos are set in nature, and all three featuring Lindeman in her reflective, mirrored suit. The singer songwriter says that ‘Atlantic’ is the track where “the music really makes me see the place in my mind,” the whirling instrumentation reflective of her mind.
Ignorance marks Lindeman’s first experience writing on keyboard, not guitar, and her first time building out arrangements before bringing them to a band. Co-produced by Lindeman and Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire), this latest single is a further introduction into what promises to be an album rife with conflict and self exploration.
