Paul Jacobs Shares New Single “Underneath the Roses”
Montreal-based indie artist Paul Jacobs teases more music from his upcoming LP
After announcing his upcoming solo album Pink Dogs on the Green Grass back in January with the single “Half Rich Loner”, Paul Jacobs – the frontman of Montreal alternative rock group Pottery – has shared his new single “Underneath the Roses”.
Written about a year ago when the world started to close down due to COVID, Jacobs turned his surroundings into a two-part, psychedelic folk track. To bring it all to life is an equally trippy music video that combines animation with live footage. Drawn by Jacobs himself, the video was a reflection of the world at the beginning of the pandemic. “When drawing the video, I was looking out my window and was seeing the world as a pretty dead, dark place”, he explains. “It was a month into winter and the moods were getting heavy. I ran with a theme of people in an underworld who don’t realize they’re more dead than alive. They’ve accepted their reality and don’t understand how much more you can get out of life.”
The eerie, ink-blot drawings and hazy musicality create a world of its own before blasting into a second part of excitement and live music, counteracting against the dreary darkness of winter.
