Toronto Rock Outfit Long Range Hustle Share Chess Boxing Video For “Comeback Kid”
Toronto-based quintet Long Range Hustle recorded their upcoming album in the famous Bathouse Studio outside of Kingston while their producer Tony Doogan kept his distance from his home in Scotland. Despite the cyber-distanced obstacle, the group were able to create an exciting and charged follow-up to their 2018 sophomore Town.
While they have yet to announce more information on the album which will be released later this year, Long Range Hustle have shared the lead single “Comeback Kid” and followed up with an inspiring new music video.
Depicting the story of a young woman and her antagonist in a fighting match of chess boxing (yes, it’s a real sport), the new music video is a cinematic match for the song’s sudden shift in intensity.
“This new music video shows us that as long as your motivations are external, as long as you’re fighting for the audience in the shadows and not for yourself, you will always get beat down. It is only when external gaze is finally gone that you have a real shot at winning the fight,” explains co-lead vocalist Paul Brogee.
And thanks to the band’s size as a five-piece, the instrumentation on “Comeback Kid” quickly takes on an arena-sized intensity, with layers of guitars and vocals creating a lush and powerful wall of sound.
“What I love about this recording is the way it sneaks up on you”, Brogee adds. “There’s no big drop, no obvious rock-and-roll production tricks, no section of the song that repeats the same way twice. But after three-and-a-half minutes you realize you can’t remember when you slammed your foot on the gas pedal of your car, trying to keep up with the frenetic anxious energy.”
