Montreal Indie Pop Songwriter Ormiston Shares Throwback Video For “Rebel”
Montreal-based artist and producer Nicola Ormiston will be releasing his debut album Hammer Down on June 4th. Performing under his family name, Ormiston has shared his latest single and video “Rebel”, inspired by the nostalgia of VHS and the early days of yacht rock.
Directed by Montreal filmmaker Ariel Poupart, the pair wanted to focus on the authenticity of pop music. “Along with Ormiston, we decided to go with a Top of the Pops setting for his musical performance. I loved the texture of the song Rebel that felt very analogic to me,” Poupart shares. “I wanted to recreate that same texture though the images and got very inspired by everything that could alter the image. When we settled on using old cathodic televisions as a means to distort and modify the visuals, I got very enthusiastic and so we got 13 of them!”
Driven by a funk groove and guitar pop riffs, “Rebel”‘s nostalgic and carefree vibe helps to travel back to the simpler days of pop music. Watch the music video below:
