DZ Deathrays Team Up With Ecca Vandal For “Fear The Anchor” From Upcoming LP
Brisane three piece DZ Deathrays teamed up with Melbourne artist Ecca Vandal on their latest single, ‘Fear the Anchor.’ The track brings all the best of the band’s grunge rock elements to life, filled with shredding guitars, a punchy chorus and Vandal’s vocals complimenting the band’s sound.
Lifted from their fifth studio album, Positive Rising: Part 2, ‘Fear the Anchor’ has already been well received by lucky Australian fans, who’ve been able to see DZ Deathrays perform the track live thanks to COVID-19 restrictions being lifted in the country. A metaphorical middle finger to the systems that continue to perpetuate fear and hate on the daily, the single has a strong resonnation with the current everyday reality the world is facing. Penned before the pandemic, the chorus’ affirmation – “I won’t let the fear wash over” – is a timely reminder not to let fear and uncertainty completely control your life.
The partnership between the band and Vandal was collaborative, and the song was medled to fit both vocalists. “We actually changed the key in pre-production…and I think it was for the better,” shares guitarist Shane Parsons. They continued to bounce ideas around while in the studio, with Vandal adding extra melodies throughout the song to bring to life the final recorded version. Vandal herself is a trained jazz musician, able to balance between soulful melodies and vibrant power through her music. She shares that she herself is a massive DZ Deathrays fan: “It was super cool to finally collab on something…I’ve always been inspired by their endless creativity and drive.”
In addition to their upcoming album release on July 9th, DZ Deathrays is also partnering with Fender and the Artist Studio to present a new Positive Rising Grant, with the goal of providing access to quality equipment to local musicians getting started in the industry. Along with merch and copies of both Positive Rising: Part One and Positive Rising: Part Two, three winners will receive a Fender Squire guitar, a Fender amp and online guitar classes from fortnightly for one year.
The band also released a music video for “Fear the Anchor” featuring the band and Vandal in a black-and-white performance of the track that you can see below.
