Electronic Duo Wake Island Share Title Track “Born To Leave” From New LP
Originally from Beirut, nomadic electronic producer duo Wake Island now split their time between Montreal and New York. Heavily influenced by their Arab roots and the Detroit techno scene, along with ’80s & ’90s pop rock, their sound is an exciting blend of their colliding worlds. The team of Philippe Manasseh and Nadim Maghzal put out their latest full-length Born To Leave on April 30th, and have shared the title track as they explore their identity from both personal and societal perspectives.
The trilingual album (sung in English, French, Arabic) dives into the cultural and social obstacles that immigrants and the receiving countries face, starting with the originating question of why do people want to leave. With the single “Born To Leave”, Wake Island shine on a light on the immigration experience, giving a clear perspective of the journey.
“With Born To Leave, we tell our immigration story from Lebanon to Canada, with all the challenges, excitement and hardships that it entails when leaving one’s home and moving to a new society. By telling our story, we hope to underline the universality of our experience, and its relatability even for people who have not immigrated. These feelings and hardships are inherent in every facet of modern society, and we believe that it is an extremely important time for stories like ours to reach as many people as possible so we can rise up to the social challenge we all face and build a better future“, share the duo.
Pulsating synthesizers and ’80s-pop give the choruses an electrifying energy, while dipping back into club-ready energy with each techno-inspired verse. Listen to the track below:
