PREMIERE: Leave Nelson B. Shares Remix EP For Lonely Ghost Records Labelmates Famish
From the quiet southeast corner of the Cleveland Metropolitan area comes sample-based musician Leave Nelson B. Having released three full LPs in 2020, and sticking to a consistent monthly release schedule for 2021, Leave Nelson B. has shared his latest contribution to the world with the new remix EP Famished. A member of the Lonely Ghost Records roster, LNB wanted to spark a conversation with the newest signees Famish, so naturally he remixed one of their tracks and sent it to them. To no one’s surprise, the track was well-received and Famish encouraged LNB to make some more.
The original Famished. EP from the indie bedroom rock four-piece had a quiet, psychedelic demeanour, mixing in shoegaze with lo-fi slacker rock for a pastel-coloured collection. Leave Nelson B. honoured that energy, but twisted them into colourful, lo-fi beats like an arts and crafts project of electronic music.
While Leave Nelson B. does not share his voice directly into the music, his samples and reconstruction of songs speaks for itself, capturing different moods and energy through pitch-correction, changing BPMs, and loops. “I loved making these types of records that let me indiscriminately toy with an artist’s work”, LNB shares. “It brings out the most creative parts in me unironically. Reinterpreting, rearranging, and in this case, reimagining my whole process in a new way. These are some of the most personal and best songs compositionally. I enjoy listening to these more than anything else I have done.”
Opening track “Retreat ’95” takes the rolling bass kick intro of Beck’s 2005 track “E-Pro” before switching into a warm, and high-pitched lo-fi sample. Following suit, subsequent tracks “Hey GDBY” and “Queen Sally” use the catchy, pitched vocals to their advantage, as sleigh bells, looped percussion, and warped instrumentation come together for a completely otherworldly reimagining of Famished. “I Brought The Cool Ranch Doritos” and “Soul And Lean” close off the album with clearer vocal samples, and more indie rock instrumentation, keeping things slightly closer to the original, but still with a distinct blanket of Leave Nelson B.’s imaginative spirit.
