Vancouver-based Producer Ross K Teams Up With London’s Urchin For Interstellar New Single “Slow Game”

After discovering the music of electronic producer Urchin over Instagram back in August 2020, Vancouver-based composer/producer Ross K decided to reach out to spark a collaboration. With the world connecting almost exclusively over the internet in 2020, Urchin having his studio on an island on the river Thames in London was no issue for combined effort.

Over a year later, their finished product is “Slow Game”, a melting pot of genres and a direct reflection of both the songwriting process and times. “It was a strange time to be writing”, shares Ross. “I had just had 6 months of gigs and touring cancelled and faced the prospect of a totally different musical world… Everything was upside down, work, social life, dating…. it all became this kind of slow game…”. Ross’ initial instrumental inspired Urchin to add his own flare with denser instrumentation and vocals, adding: “I heard a melody and just went for it into a mic… I don’t think Ross was expecting to get vocals back, but he’s been open all the way.”

The result is a captivating and crescendoing blend of electronica, dream-pop, and synthwave, sharing similarities to Bonobo, Fourtet, and James Blake with its lush instrumentals and haunting crooning vocals.

Alongside the release, Ross K has shared an NFT project tied to “Slow Game” on the SuperRare platform, collaborating with Portuguese filmmaker and photographer Joāo Marques. Together, the two conceptualized a visual that pairs with Urchin’s lyrics and emotion. “I knew that João would be perfect for this track, his visuals capture a sense of introspection and ethereal beauty that I really resonate with”, Ross shares. The singles artwork is the result, with a man casted in an orange glow against a cold blue backdrop, mirroring the disconnect from the world in the last year and a half. The NFT was released on Ross K’s Foundation page on May 17th, and the buyer gains access of both an audiovisual piece as well as transferring the song’s publishing to the buyer.
