Francis Lung – Miracle

June 18
Memphis Industries

Indie rock/Singer-songwriter

Miracle marks the first full-length release from Francis Lung since his critically acclaimed 2019 debut, A Dream Is U.  Emerging with a more focused and deeply personal perspective on the record, it is a cohesive and generous offering of vulnerability. “I don’t want to be defined by my anxiety, my depression or any history of substance abuse,” Francis says, “but I do want to reach out to other people who have had similar experiences, especially if it’s in a way that helps them feel a little better. To me, this music is celebrating healing as much as it focuses on the darker sides of the human psyche.”

FORESEEN Entertainment

As respected curators of Pan-African music from across the diasporas, Moonshine’s latest SMS for Location album fuses levity and acumen, inventive electronic production with traditional instrumentation, all the while intensifying a collaboration between artists from around the world. SMS for Location, Vol. 4 crosses genres and continents to follow the producers, DJs and MCs from Montreal’s legendary Moonshine parties to underground UK clubs, Parisian Afro-beat soirées to Kinshasa’s booming electronic scene”.

Thinking of life through the metaphor of a camera, the aperture has been adjusted and what is important is now much more clear. Music and family are the subject and everything else is just noise in the background.”

Free Throw – Piecing It Together

June 25
Triple Crown Records

Alternative/Emo punk

For Free Throw, their fourth full-length album Piecing It Together documents their growth as individuals grappling with the hard truths, that with age, become harder to ignore or cover up with an endless string of late nights out drinking with friends. Throughout the album’s twelve tracks, Piecing It Together finds Free Throw abandoning childhood notions of success and happiness through a thorough exploration of personal fulfillment. It’s about reaching the heights that once felt impossible and everything that comes after. How no matter what we do or where we go, we must continue to wake up and find the strength to keep on keeping on despite everything we tell ourselves about ourselves.

Hiatus Kaiyote – Mood Valiant

June 25
Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune

Alternative

Melbourne four-piece Haitus Kaiyote navigate the concept of genre with a free will and an unapologetic sense of confidence on their new album Mood Valiant. A colourful collection of soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, rock, and more, the latest record is an exciting collection, brought on my a resilient few years dating back to 2018.  During a brief swing through the U.S., Hiatus’s frontwoman Naomi Saafield was diagnosed with breast cancer and rushed back to Australia and into the hospital, where she underwent a life-saving mastectomy. As Nai recovered, the band turned back to their work with altered perspectives, doubling down on the new paradigm following a 2019 trip to Rio de Janeiro.

Janette King – What We Lost

June 25
Hot Tramp

Indie R&B

Montreal-based R&B artist Janette King makes a strong statement, both sonically and lyrically on her debut album What We Lost. As the title suggests, the record deals with change, and loss, and what it means to accept and process the unpredictability of life’s true weight. Despite it being a debut by definition, the record boasts a powerful and somehow familiar presence that exceeds its brief existence.

Modest Mouse – The Golden Casket

June 25
Epic Records

Alternative

Breaking the silence for the first time in six years, veteran alternative act Modest Mouse return with their seventh studio album The Golden Casket. Diving into more psychedelic and experimental territory, the new collection is an interesting expansion of the band’s sound that shows both their iconic status in the genre and their ability to stay relevant years later.

BERWYN – TAPE 2 / FOMALHAUT

June 18
Sony

Hip-hop/Singer-Songwriter

TAPE 2 / FOMALHAUT comes 8 months after the release of Trinidad-born, Romford, UK- based rapper/songwriter BERWYN’S acclaimed debut mixtape DEMOTAPE / VEGA, a period in which he has been anything but idle: in addition to fitting in a series of live shows in the short break between lockdowns, he’s spent his time writing, recording, and collaborating. The result is a body of work that further details his origin story – his spontaneous and immediate lyrics detail a long look over his shoulder at the harder times that have led up to this point, as well as an eye on the exciting prospects the future may hold.
