Watch The Trailer From Royal Canoe For Special “Porch Party” Project To Coincide With Upcoming LP

Winnipeg-based indie-pop act Royal Canoe have formulated a plan to celebrate the release of their upcoming album Sidelining on July 9th. Fans around the world can participate by playing their new single “Surrender” at the same time from their porch, driveway, or even through an open window. Since the group are unable to celebrate with an album release show with their community, they have found a resourceful way to stay connected, matching the album cover artwork of a front porch. Royal Canoe is asking their fans (and anyone else who wants to join) to go out on their porch and at the very same time, blast their new single “Surrender” at 6:45 pm ET/5:45 pm CT on July 9th for precisely 3 minutes and 58 seconds to come together.

Register at royalcanoe.com/porch and enter your address and then commit to playing ‘Surrender” so the band can track all the participating locations. There will be a map to track all of the listening parties.

While “Surrender” is still a secret to listeners, fans should expect a more experimental and laidback track, due to their shift in songwriting for Sidelining.

“It feels like we’ve tried to write a song like ‘Surrender; about 20 different times with Royal Canoe (something with a tight little beat and lots of space), but we usually end up overthinking it and discarding it”, notes Matt Peters. “The approach with these Sidelining sessions was to try to get out of our own way and just let things happen. The main groove from ‘Surrender’ is the result of a few of us just jamming in the moment, finding room for each other and trying to latch onto some Bowie energy. I think it’s the best example from the record of how much we benefited from learning to say yes more, not analyzing or suffocating the ideas, and just letting the songs be a natural reflection of where we were in the moment.”
