Indie Pop Trio Varley Focus On Social Media With Dreamy New Single “One Two Three”
Indie-pop trio Varley have shared a second single in as many months, a commentary on the tendency to compare oneself to others, titled “One Two Three.” The group of multi-instrumentalists, Dublin-born Claire-Ann and German band mates Joschka Bender and Matthias Heising, have also shared a visualizer alongside the track.
“One Two Three” focuses on the influence of social media, and how it can lead to feelings of inadequacy through unrealistic expectations. The lyrics centre on seeing what others have, how others look, where others are in life and counting off the ‘flaws’ that those perfectly framed pieces of someone else’s situation might highlight in contrast. The band says that song is meant to capture “the unachievable beauty standard we are surrounded by in today’s society and how people’s lives online can seem so perfect and how it becomes harder not to compare yourself or your life to everything you see online. It talks about the feeling of being stuck in a big machine that’s trying to change us but also has the realization that if we apologize for being ourselves then we will be lost forever.”
Reflective at its core, “One Two Three” emphasizes the lyrics, with clear vocals against a backdrop of distorted guitar and an easy-going drum tempo. The end result is a heart-on-sleeve track that highlights Varley’s song-writing and overall sound. Drawing influence from the likes of Bon Iver, Fleetwood Mac and Phoebe Bridgers, the somewhat moody tone and self-exploratory sentiments in their music won’t come as a surprise.
The group’s debut album, Smalltalk & DMCs, is set for release this September, and follows 2019’s EP, Phantom Studies.
