Indie Rock Outfit Kin & Company Trim Down For New Album; Share Closing Single “Hallelujah, Amen”
After tracking a separate record revolving around Kin & Company member Jonah Thornton’s struggles with mental health, the Cincinnati-based indie rock four-piece took a step back. Frustrated by his inability to properly convey his thoughts and emotions about his anxiety and depression, Jonah and co-songwriter Nathan Schieffer took some time from the studio band tucked away in the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, and wrote music for the sake of music, removing themselves from the emotional weight of their prior project.
The result is a beautiful and patient set of tracks shaped by Schieffer and Thornton to offset the struggles they had been facing- still commenting on Thornotn’s own mental health, but supported with the backbone of their friendship and partnership within the band. Titled Conversations with the Pictures in My Head, the new album highlights the duo’s greatest strengths, and presents itself as close to the original writing process as the two have ever gotten.
Nine tracks, all stripped back and heavily focused on their storytelling, Conversations is a warm-spirited blend of indie folk and emo, welcoming a raw and candid listening experience. Closing the album is their latest single “Hallelujah, Amen”, a desert-late-night piece that evokes elements of Fleet Foxes, Houndmouth, and The Weeks, with a subtle Americana richness. The hopefulness of the song is a perfectly-timed exit for the project, acting as a sigh of relief from Thornton and Schieffer.
