Aussie Indie Pop Duo ALIBII Share New Single “But I”
Singer-songwriter Courtney Egginton and multi-instrumentalist Will Cumberlege first met while studying music in Sydney, sparking a connection that would grow from humble acoustic tracks to fully formed indie pop efforts as ALIBII. On their latest single “But I”, the pair turn a gentle piano intro into a bright, electronica-infused finish on the emotive piece.
Written during the pandemic, the pair share about the song: “The lyrics to “But I” cover a multitude of emotions – “We found shelter under the same roof, where it gets crowded in one room” is a reference to moving out with friends and it being difficult to have a moment to yourself, but also it’s a metaphor for shelter through music as an escape to get through hard times. Other lyrics refer to clashing ideas and personalities, and the toxicity that brewed from lockdown. When you’re in this situation, you often try to avoid confrontation and stay on everybody’s good side, but you can end up being caught in the middle and upsetting everyone – hence the lyric “Caught in a cloud of concern, I’m the only one that got hurt”. But in reality, there’s no need to get at each other because the world is going crazy”.
