Alt-Pop Artist Anji Kaizen Opens Up About An Unexpected Encounter On New Single “Blink”
Alt-pop singer-songwriter Anji Kaizen wrote her new single “Blink” after an unexpected and traumatizing experience during a sleepover with friends.
“I went to bed one night with a full heart, and a group of people I loved and thought of as good friends sleeping around me”, she beings, “but woke up in the middle of the night to being attacked by one of those people. They suffered from a serious mental illness none of us had known the full scope of. They were dangerous to themselves and everyone around them, and I was the direct victim of that assault”.
Her careful storytelling provides a glimpse into her experience, as she channels her emo-pop punk influences to round out its message.
“When you’re singing a song about ‘supermassive darkness’ that keeps pulling you in, you’ve got to at least make it fun to listen to and somewhat relatable”, she explains. “I don’t think I could take myself seriously singing this song in any other genre. Since I was a kid I’ve always loved artists like Nirvana and Paramore, where Kurt and Hayley face off with their rage, their pain and their heartbreak – yet somehow craft this incredibly catchy, melodic and beautiful alt rock song out of all of it. And that’s exactly what I was going for with ‘Blink'”.
