Leeds Singer-Songwriter Jake Whiskin Shares New Single “Heatwave”
On his new single “Heatwave”, Leeds-based singer-songwriter Jake Whiskin wanted to explore the self-destructive tendencies that unravel in relationships. As a former member of his local DIY scene, Whiskin has turned his grunge-rock origins into shimmery, singer-songwriter ballads, finding a balance of Soccer Mommy, Manchester Orchestra, and Big Thief.
“I can sometimes have a bit of a self-destructive side and this is what this song is about really, spending time with people that aren’t good for you – ‘You drive me insane but make it fun’ kind of embodies that sentiment”, Jake shares about his new release.
“It’s a pretty anthemic, 90’s sounding track so I wanted to balance that with something a little darker which was inspired by Ava Adore era Smashing Pumpkins. In the studio we were layering lots of feedback and distorted synths to have some juxtaposition against a song that’s otherwise a pretty big pop track.”
Mirroring the retro sounds of the ’90s, the accompanying music video possess a nostalgic, VHS camcorder vantage point of the recording process.
