Montreal Alt-Pop Artist Emi Jeen Finds Her Emotional Side On New Ballad “Hurt U” From Upcoming EP ‘Why So Serious?’
Montreal alternative pop artist Emi Jeen has announced an upcoming EP release alongside the first single from the project, “Hurt U”. The EP, Why So Serious?, is set for release September 7th of this year, and the new track introduces listeners to a more vulnerable, emotional side of Emi Jeen.
The new track is built on the foundation of piano, violin and voice. The various instrumental elements build throughout the track, a sustained crescendo, as the listeners hear the story of a failing love. As the lyrics speak to promises in an effort to convince the other to stay, the instruments continue to build, matching the earnest nature of the song and the realization that comes with losing someone you love. “Hurt U” is a glimpse of a love that didn’t survive. It’s the point of no return. You realize that you hurt the person you loved and that it’s too late to apologize;” shares Jeen. Heartfelt but not desperate, there’s an honesty in the lyrics that will surely speak to anyone who has lost someone through their own actions, romantically or platonically.
“Hurt U” was created from a distance, between Montreal and London with Mexican-Canadian songwriter, producer and cellist Andrea Rocha, whom Jeen met at the beginning of her work on the EP. “I started this song on the piano and couldn’t finish it. I sent it to [Rocha] and she was instantly inspired by it. We were able to finish it through many back and forths via email and zoom,” shares Jeen, as the track came together during the pandemic. “She recorded cello and Jonathan Chan recorded some violin. I then recorded all the vocals in Montreal, even some by myself.”
Having recently finished up a number of Toronto and Quebec dates, expect to see more of Emi Jeen on the road this year.
