PREMIERE: Brooklyn Production Duo Killers To Lovers Unveil Debut Full-Length ‘Near Future’ Alongside Exclusive Q&A

Brooklyn-based production duo Killers To Lovers, comprised of friends Michael “Slim” Petrolawicz and Dan Vosk, have found success individually and collectively, working with an array of artists including Trippie Redd, Azealia Banks, Lil TJay, Wale, Aaron Carter, French Montana, iLoveMakonnen, and many more. Building on their discography as a unit, the duo have officially released their debut full-length via Dissonant Wave Records, Near Future. Spanning 14 tracks, the new effort flies across different genres, and brings together a handful of stellar collaborations to flood the tracklist.

With previous singles “Green Light”, “Bad Habits”, and “Novocaine” establishing the group’s momentum over the last year or so, Near Future gives fans a clear line of sight into their creative mindset. Energetic, catchy, and commanding, Killers To Lovers create with intention.

“It’s really a great representation of the way we love to write music – which is totally in your face”, the pair share. “Whether that means energetic, aggressive, or emotional by sonically and lyrically forcing things to the surface for whoever is listening”.

Bringing together elements of rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and EDM for a dynamic and versatile listen, Near Future is wonderfully unpredictable and exhilarating. Stand out tracks “Nothing Left” featuring Jon Worthy and Winna Skellz, and “Green Light” featuring Telli lead the way with the producers’ rap-rock blend, while songs like “Rewind” featuring Yung Miles and “Reputation” featuring GVIN lean into more trap and R&B inspired elements to balance out the record.

Hosting a plethora of features on the record, Killers To Lovers find their strength when working in tandem with each individual artist. “Each one of them is so unique in their art and they have so much to offer“, Slim continues. “I think in the same way we want our music to have an effect on the artist we’re working with, there’s just a feeling you get when you work with the right artist“.

With plenty of hooks to go around, Near Future has something for everybody, as Petrolawicz and Vosk make a statement as in-demand producers and songwriters.

Congrats on releasing your debut full-length. How do you feel about having it out into the world?

Thank you! It feels amazing to finally have our album out there for everyone to hear. It’s really a great representation of the way we love to write music, which is totally in your face, whether that means energetic, aggressive, or emotional by sonically and lyrically forcing things to the surface for whoever is listening.

‘Near Future’ spans a number of genres & styles. Is there a certain style you lean more towards or is nothing off the table?

For us, really nothing is off of the table. We are such fans of so many amazing musicians across so many genres and generations. Most of the time when we create, we’ll start writing without a genre in mind and as we build we can see where things are going.

This record is chock full of great collaborations. As producers, what’s something you value most when collaborating with an artist?

We are super lucky to be able to collaborate with such awesome artists. Each one of them is so unique in their art and they have so much to offer. They have the ability to say here’s this thing, but let’s add a couple of more angles to it. I think in the same way we want our music to have an effect on the artist we’re working with, there’s just a feeling you get when you work with the right artist.

Is there a track that almost didn’t make the cut for the record?

There were actually a couple of tracks that really found their place right at the end of the process. “Reputation” was a song that actually began with track we sent GVIN in a totally different style from where it actually ended up. He wrote an amazing song, but we realized the music just wasn’t working, so we asked for the vocals and started completely from scratch, writing parts from the vocals up. The last song on the album “Scorpion” was also a song  that was once a whole production with lot’s of instrumentation, and it became something also totally different from where it once was.

Similarly, was there a song that you instantly knew was going to be something great.

“Novocaine” is a song that we knew would be special from the moment we began writing it. It was only the two of us in the writing process, and after demoing it ourselves, we asked ReylovesU if he’d like to cut it, and it completely opened our eyes to what the song could be.

Being a production duo versus an upfront artist is a bit of a unique angle. Do you think there’s a possibility of shifting the record into a live show?

We wanted to make our tracklist for the album in a way that really takes people on a journey. A journey that has high highs and low lows. We want people to feel everything. Love, happiness, rage, sadness…whatever these songs might make you feel, so if we could make sure people could have that experience live, I think it’s definitely possible.
