Ottawa Indie Art Rock Group Pony Girl Deconstruct The Rat Race On New Single “Running In Circles”
Ottawa/Hull’s Pony Girl are back with another single and video ahead of their new album. Following the two previously shared singles “Age of Anxious” and “Enny One Wil Love You,” “Running Circles” is a cathartic track about the modern day rat-race and dead-end jobs.
Starting off on a more relaxed foot, “Running in Circles” quickly ramps up, changing gears into a grungy, distorted soundscape. The lyrics speak to passing time, and coupled with the instrumentation leaves you feeling almost suspended, going in circles yourself in tandem with the music. As it culminates, the tension that builds in the first half of the track comes to a head and releases, with the fantasy of how to escape the circle coming to the forefront. All these elements come to life in the dark and fantasy-filled music video.
The band shares that: ““Running in Circles” goes as heavy as your fantasies about killing your boss. We drew from all the jobs we never really cared for, all the shitty bosses we fled, and all the lows of the dead-end job cycle. It’s a towering, personal song that we wish wasn’t so relatable.” It might go without saying, but there’s sure to be more than a few who relate to the feelings in the lyrics and depicted through the video. The imagery and colours might also seem a bit familiar – not pointing any fingers here, you can decide for yourself.
Enny One Will Love You will be Pony Girl’s debut release with Paper Bag Records, out on October 14th and featuring 12 tracks. It follows the 2013 release of their first album, Show Me Your Fears, and 2015’s Foreign Life, and will be supported by a handful of upcoming live dates.
