Begonia Shares Video For New Single “Cold Night”; Announces Upcoming Tour Dates

Begonia (moniker of Alexa Dirks) has had a slew of good news to share recently. Just last month, she shared news of her upcoming LP, Powder Blue, along with the first single, “Right Here.” The Toronto based artist has now shared a first run of upcoming tour dates and new single and video from the upcoming album, “Cold Night.”

Putting the emphasis on Dirks’ quietly powerful, crystal clear vocals, the track is a lesson in musical storytelling. “This song is the breakdown of a horrible life-changing relationship in three parts,” shares Dirks. “Like…stages of grief I guess? Verse one is when you’re not ready to let go and just the thought of being ‘left behind’ makes you feel so desperate and detached, like you’re not even human anymore. Verse two is reflecting on the reality of the relationship itself and particular stories that come up only with time to reveal the truth. The last part of the song after the strings hit is all about accepting it for what it is and moving forward. Like sitting in your despair and sadness, but also knowing that it needed to be over and that you did the right thing by walking away.”

The three ‘parts’ are discernible in the song’s progression, each instalment sonically different from the last. As it builds and evolves, so does the intensity of the music backing the vocals. At its peak, a collection of soaring strings and steady percussion come together behind the vocals, a beautiful arrangement that compliments Dirks’ voice perfectly. The music video sees Dirks surrounded by nature, the scene similarly evolving as the track unfolds, a collection of flashing lights bringing an ethereal feel to the video. “Deadmen (producers Matt Peters and Matt Shellenberg) really knocked it out of the park with their string arrangements on my upcoming album, and this song in particular is one of my favourites so I’m so glad to be releasing it as a single,” shares Dirks.

Powder Blue will follow 2019’s debut LP Fear and is set for release February 24, 2023 via Birthday Cake Records.
