Canadian Singer-Songwriter City And Colour Shares New Single “Underground” From Upcoming Album ‘The love Still Held Me Near’

City and Colour – moniker of Canadian singer, songwriter and performer Dallas Green – has shared a second, emotionally charged single and video from his newly announced and highly-anticipated new album, The Love Still Held Me Near.

The soulful new single, “Underground,” offers a strong message that life is a gift, and every moment should be embraced for what it is, in that moment. Even with this more pressing message at its core, the song itself feels light, with sunny guitar riffs accompanying Green’s unmistakeable vocals. A steady drum beat keeps the track moving, keys chiming in on the melody, with hopeful lyrics placed above it all, coming together to deliver a heartfelt, hopeful and intentional track.

The single’s music video, directed by Michael Maxxis is the second instalment of a cinematic series set to accompany every song on the new LP, all directed by Maxxis. The video for “Underground” shows City and Colour performing on what seems to be an empty tarmac, alternating between images in colour and black and white, a classily dressed man with a swanky old school car watching the performance play out. On the video and the overall cinematic approach to the album, Maxxis says that “[Green’s] walls are down on this album, and I wanted to capture that on film.

“The Love Still Held Me Near was born out of unimaginable loss and the subsequent journey through the grief and heartache that followed,” explains Green about the origins of the upcoming album. “It’s about digging deep down into yourself and attempting to unearth hope and light in the things that can comfort you through those times. For me that has always been writing and recording music, so that’s exactly what I did.

Produced by Green and longtime band member and collaborator Matt Kelly, the 12 songs that comprise The Love Still Held Me Near follow the most difficult period in Green’s life, including the tragic loss of his best friend in 2019. Green poignantly eulogizes him in the stunning opening track “Meant To Be,” which was released this past November.

This upcoming album is set to see the songwriter revealing more of himself amidst new textures, arrangements and soundscapes not previously heard on the albums. While it was born out of navigating a trying time, it is an album of hope, redemption and inspiration. The Love Still Held Me Near will be released on March 31 via Still Records, an imprint of Dine Alone Records.
